Major League Baseball's Colorado Rockies announced the start of construction of their state-of-the-art Dominican Republic Academy on 14 April in Jubey, Boca Chica, less than half an hour's drive from Santo Domingo. Most MLB teams have baseball academies in the DR where they nurture the baseball stars of the future.

Once completed by summer 2013, the academy will be the office and home for all Rockies Latin American operations, including the Rockies Dominican Summer League team.

Bill Geivett, Rockies vice president was in the DR for the groundbreaking ceremony.

"We have always had a strong presence in Latin America, but our new academy will greatly benefit our staff and young players not only in their baseball pursuits, but in language and education as well," he said. Others who came for the event were: executive vice president Hal Roth, director of international scouting Rolando Fernandez, and Tom Probst, director of medical operations and special projects.

Latin American Architectural Firm GVA designed the Rockies' new US$6 million Dominican Academy. The academy will house approximately 80 players and consist of two buildings with a full clubhouse, administrative offices, dormitory style living for players, living quarters for staff, training/weight room, cafeteria, entertainment room, computer room and classroom. The academy will also include two full sized baseball fields, one half field, batting cages and pitching mounds.
