The Navy has chosen to transfer the Navy men posted at Nisibon, La Altagracia province after a boat making an illegal trip attempt to Puerto Rico capsized last week near La Vacama. Most of the people on board were from Haiti.

According to reports, three of the passengers died before boat left Dominican waters. One survivor, Josefa Pie told journalists that the Navy crew were aware of the trip and had been present when the boat left Dominican territory.

The Navy contingent, based in Nisibon, was transferred, and Navy Captain Felix Cedeno was sent to head the station. The Navy reported that several Navy men are under arrest for investigation. Following an investigation, Navy Captain Ruddy de la Cruz Montero confirmed that the men were aware the boat trip was departing and did nothing to stop this. News reports have confirmed the death of two women named as Haitian nationals Julliet Jean, 31, and Yina Polviser, 28, and an unidentified man.

El Nacional reported that at least 60 people were on board the boat that made the attempted illegal crossing from La Vacama, near Punta del Coco.
