Four Dominican engineering graduate students were part of the 12-student team that won second and third places in the 21-team Madrid Ecocity international competition held 14-15 April in Madrid. Madrid Eco City is a conference that discusses the feasibility of creating an eco-friendly city, mainly using electric or solar powered cars.

The Dominicans were representing their university, Universidad Politecnica de Cartagena (UPCT) in the construction of an electricity-solar powered vehicle. The winner was the vehicle that ran for the greatest distance with the lowest consumption.

The competition took place throughout the day with each car circulating nine times (about 1.7 kilometers) around Casa de Campo in Madrid.

As reported in El Caribe, professor Antonio Guerrero commended the Dominican engineers who are studying renewable energy and IT and communications at the university. The students who took part were Juan Gabriel Faxas, Ana Gabriela Ossers and Enrique Rivas, graduates of the Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and Napoli Gomez, a graduate of Universidad APEC in Santo Domingo. The students are in Spain on scholarships provided by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.

The team built Anibal, an electricity-solar powered vehicle built with carbon fiber, aluminum and titanium parts weighing around 60 kilos, 3.10 meters in length and 60 centimeters wide, and which uses flexible high yield photovoltaic panels. See a photo of the car with the solar panel at
