Tsunami alert installed in Barahona

The Weather Department (Onamet) has announced the installation of the country's fourth tsunami meter in Barahona. Onamet director Gloria Ceballos said the mareograph could detect tsunamis and will help monitor sea level heights and predict changes in the sea, storm waves and coastal alerts. Sea level observations are needed among other things for navigation, coastal building activity and to study long-term sea level changes. This is the fourth such device to be installed in the country. Others are already operational in Puerto Plata for the north coast, Punta Cana for the east coast and Caucedo Port for the southeast coast. The mareograph operates by remotely sending information to computers installed at the Onamet headquarters.
