Following the diagnosis of a Canadian with rabies, Toronto Public Health has confirmed that the strain of the rabies virus he has is one found in dogs and mongooses on the island of Hispaniola.

Dr. Elizabeth Rae says the Public Health Agency of Canada has alerted authorities in the Dominican Republic and they are assessing the patient's contacts to see if they need rabies shots.

Toronto Public Health has been screening personal contacts and health-care workers who treated the patient to see if any here need to have rabies shots.

Rae says about 125 people have been assessed, but likely fewer than 20 people will need to have preventative treatment.
