Jean Gentil, the movie by husband and wife filmmakers Dominican Laura Amelia Guzman and her Mexican husband Israel Cardenas, has made it into The New York Times. The film tells the story of an educated Haitian accountant who also taught French and his struggles to find decent employment and meaning to life in the city and countryside in the Dominican Republic. The lead actor is Jean Remy Genty, who plays a role closely modeled on his own life. Though deeply religious and possessed of a profound dignity and stoicism, Gentil is tested by discrimination, exploitation, loneliness, and despair. The film has toured the world successfully participating in film festivals for its balance of a restrained documentary realism with contemplative cinematography.

This is the second film by Guzman and Cardenas who originally made a splash in 2007 with their debut hybrid documentary narrative Cochochi, for which they share script, photography, production and direction credits. Cochochi won the Discovery Award at the Toronto Film Festival and went on to screen in several major international festivals.
