Dominican expats living in Canada will not be able to vote for overseas deputies in the 20 May elections. The new legislators posts were created in the 2010 Constitution. Registered voters in Canada, with a universe of 2,697, are only authorized to vote for the next President and Vice President of the Dominican Republic in Toronto and Montreal.

The Canadian authorities say the country does not accept being included in a voting circumscription.

Dominican ambassador Jose del Carmen Urena said that the Canadian authorities have said that this would be in violation of their regulations. He added that they nevertheless say they are willing to explore terms and conditions for the absentee ballot.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) says there is an expat vote of 328,649 registered voters.
