A California woman, Julie Villarini, who had recently lost her husband turned her grief into an entrepreneurship project with her nephew, Courtland Palmer in the Dominican Republic.

The son of US celebrity chef Charlie Palmer, Courtland Palmer raised US$90,000 to set up a bakery, Panaderia Tio Russ, for orphaned and destitute girls living at the Dona Chucha and Altagracia orphanages in Santo Domingo. Chef Palmer helped by hosting a charity pig roast at VML Winery that raised US$40,000. Courtland lives in California.

The bakery provides food to eat and income for the orphanage, and helps the surrounding community by selling the bread. The plan is that the girls can learn how to cook and prepare food, and acquire skills that enable them to get jobs, making the project a sustainable initiative.
