Customs director Rafael Camilo announced that the DR has signed the Kyoto Convention to simplify and harmonize international customs procedures. Countries that join the Convention commit themselves to using computer systems to speed up border clearances and to use modern analytical techniques to pinpoint risky shipments for inspection. Governments must release all goods as soon as customs has examined them.

Camilo delivered the ratification of the convention to Kunio Mikuriya, secretary general of the World Customs Organization, during the 15th Meeting of Director Generals of Customs of the Americas and the Caribbean that took place in Uruguay. Camilo said the ratification of the treaty would contribute to the continuing modernization of customs in the country.
