Dominican authorities confirmed yesterday, Monday 23 April, the death of six people affected by cholera in Tamboril, where as of yesterday 523 patients have been treated for symptoms of the disease, as reported in Diario Libre.

A further two adults with cholera symptoms have died in the town after being hospitalized. The latest victim is Hilda Mercedes, 82, who passed away in the municipal district of Canca la Piedra on Saturday, 21 April.

The Deputy Minister for Public Health based in Santiago, Dr. Yadira Perez, said that 36 patients have tested positive for cholera. Nevertheless, she stated that the situation was under the control of the ministry brigades that are carrying out preventive campaigns in several areas of Tamboril.

At 10am yesterday, Monday 23 April, 19 patients were being treated in the hospital in Tamboril, of whom three were women, four children and 12 men, who presented fever, stomach pains and diarrhea. Dr. Perez said that the patients who were hydrated and with fewer bowel movements are being discharged so that they can continue recovering at home. The official said that Public Health is treating any patient with vomiting and diarrhea as a suspect cholera case.

Over the past four days, four tanks of chlorinated water were installed in sectors like Canca La Piedra and El Arenazo, where the greatest numbers of cases have been reported. In the meantime, most residents in Tamboril are refusing to drink water directly from the normal water supply for fear of cholera.
