The Dominican government and United States ambassador Raul Yzaguirre have been discussing the accusations voiced once again by Spanish priest Christopher Hartley about the treatment of Haitians in the cane fields of the Dominican Republic.

According to a report by Hoy reporter Fior Gil, the ambassador said that he did not think that Hartley's accusations would have a negative effect on the country. Dominican Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso said that the accusations of unfair treatment of the agricultural workers were just another attempt to discredit the Dominican Republic.

None of the participants in the meeting with Ambassador Yzaguirre would issue statements to the press. Foreign Minister Morales Troncoso said that the progress made in the working conditions in the sugar industry were evident to all except Father Hartley, a priest who worked in San Jose de los Llanos in San Pedro de Macoris province between 1997 and 2007.
