The Ministry of Culture and Orange Telecom are sponsoring quality live artistic presentations at the open-air Teatro Arena Nereyda Rodriguez in the afternoons and evenings during the celebration of the Santo Domingo International Book Fair. The book fair, the country's leading annual cultural event, opened on 18 April and continues through Sunday 6 May on the grounds of Plaza de la Cultura (off Maximo Gomez Avenue) and there are events going on all day.
The calendar for these events is:
Tuesday, 24 April
7pm. "Bocetos," 30 performing artists (dancers, painters, actors and musicians) from the southwestern province of Azua, directed by Starling Diaz.
8:30 pm. Teatro Popular Danzante presents: "Drum Beats for the Queen" in honor of folklorist Nereyda Rodriguez.
Wednesday, 25 April
7pm. From Nicaragua, Luis E. Mejia Godoy sings the poems of Ruben Dario, Ernesto Cardenal, Jose Coronel Urtrecho.
9pm. Singer-songwriter Pavel Nunez on stage.
Thursday, 26 April.
9pm. Rafelito Mirabal and his Sistema Temperado band. He is known for his unique style of merging Dominican folklore with jazz and other genres.
Friday, 27 April.
7pm. Hip-hop dance performances of the catchy poems of Dominican Juan Antonio Alix.
9pm. K-Milo in Concert. Listen to the new bachata sensation, famous for his song 'Pero te vas a arrepentir'.
Saturday, 28 April.
7pm. Typical music and dance night. Santiago Folklore Dance group presents Rhythms and Dances of the Land, directed by Tony Liriano. This is tops in Dominican folklore groups.
8:30pm. La Malacrianza Ensemble, a folklore performance from Costa Rica.
Sunday, 29 April.
4pm. Fusion Dance, with performances of contemporary South Korean dance. The artists combine oriental dance with contributions from Dominican culture.
9pm. Guitarist and singer Rando Camasta on stage.
Monday, 30 April.
7pm. Aura, a show with young talents Manny Cruz, Javier Grullon and Jose Julio Suyey who have worked on local productions of Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, High School Musical, among others.
Tuesday, 1 May
6:30pm. Performance by the National Folklore Dance group.
7:30pm. Concheria with the National Dance Company of Costa Rica.
8:30pm. Tribu del Sol rock group in concert, with Laura Rivera, Rafa Payan and Papolo.
Wednesday, 2 May
7pm. Academia Ballet Concierto presents Dominicans, Myths, Legacies and Traditions, a production by Carlos Veitia, part of celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the dance troupe. Classical dance, jazzdance and contemporary dance numbers.
8:30pm Aljadaqui pop-rock concert.
Thursday, 3 May
7pm. Performance by Roldan Marmol and his band.
8:30pm. Pop n with the National Ballet, choreography by Isadora Bruno and Carlos Veitia, directed by Marinella Sallent. Dancers of the national ballet perform to the music of The Beatles and Juan Luis Guerra.
Friday, 4 May.
8pm. Urban music show, Let's Go with the Nucleo Exremo, Dance Center. Let's Go is a comedy-musical with a positive message for young people.
Saturday, 5 May
6:30pm. Voices from Overseas. Dominican songwriter, Cynthia La Cruz Concert. She is a new Latin music discovery in New York City.
7pm. Camerata with the Escuela Elemental de Musica Elila Mena, under the direction of professor Mejia Nunez, listen to the talented students of the national music school play violin, viola, cello and percussion ensembles.
8:30pm. Voices of Overseas, concert with Karina Pasian, the Dominican-American singer who performed at Quincy Jones' We Are The Future concert in Rome and at the White House for Black Music Month. Her album First Love was nominated for a Grammy in Best Contemporary R&B album category.
Sunday, 6 May
9pm. Los Hermanos Rosario closing concert.
