An operation headed by the Central Electoral Board's cedula issuing unit director Americo Rodriguez, together with electoral military personnel and directed by the JCE is launching a series of raids on the homes of people who have taken out between two and four and even up to twenty national identity cards, known as cedulas.
According to El Nacional, the head of the JCE Inspection service, Juan Bautista Tavarez Gomez spoke to reporters during the first raid in Villas Agricolas at a house owned by Juan Carlos Jose Aguiar de los Santos, who has had four duplicates.
Up to now 149,000 free duplicate cedulas have been issued, valued by the JCE at between 500 and 1000 pesos each, and whilst the law does not limit the number, the JCE is concerned by the figures and are raiding their homes to find out why the duplicates were requested.
It has been discovered that 146 people have requested more than one duplicate, including Juan Antonio Morales Rodriguez from Bani, who requested 58.
