The Dominican Republic will have a new Miss Dominican Republic Universe, Dulcita Lieggi Francisco, the organizing committee of the Miss Dominican Republic pageant announced yesterday, Tuesday 24 April. The original winner of the 17 April pageant, Carlina Duran Baldera, representing La Vega, was dethroned after it was discovered that she had married fellow Dominican Amad Adl on 6 June 2009, as confirmed by their marriage certificate. The rules of the competition require candidates to have never been married.
The announcement was made from Puerto Rico by Magali Febles, who is also director of the Dominican franchise of Miss Universe. Febles said that Duran Baldera, who has admitted that she was married, would be replaced by first runner-up Dulcita Lieggi Francisco.
Febles said that Duran had "hid her marital status and the organizers could not be complicit and accept an illegality. As a consequence, our only option was to take away her crown."
Febles was expected in the DR today for the crowning of the new Miss Dominican Republic.
The new Miss Dominican Republic, who is 24 years old and 1.80 meters tall, is a professional model. She represented the National District (Santo Domingo).
Lieggi, whose father is Italian, represented the Dominican Republic in the Miss Italia nel Mondo in 2009, winning the title of Miss Caribbean as one of the semi-finalists, and then came fourth in the same pageant for expat Italians or daughters of Italians in 2011.
