The UK's David Jessop, who has lobbied for better understanding and integration between Europe and the Caribbean for many years, has been decorated by the Dominican government in London. Jessop is the executive director of the London-based Caribbean Council, a London-based consultancy that works with Caribbean governments. He was honored with the Order of Christopher Columbus.

Dominican ambassador to the UK Federico Cuello Camilo awarded the honors in the name of President Leonel Fernandez and Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso. The embassy sought to recognize Jessop's 35 years of work in defense of Caribbean interests in the areas of sugar, bananas, rum and tourism.

The award was made as part of the Dominicans Day that took place in London.

Jessop expressed his appreciation for the honor, and said he was convinced of the role of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean in relations with the United Kingdom. The DR has always been a comforting country, because it is an open country, with friendly people and proactive businesspeople, he said, as reported in Diario Libre.
