The Central Electoral Board (JCE) will "save" some RD$7 million thanks to its decision not to use the services of the Dominican National Transport Federation (Fenatrado) for distributing the election pouches and using the Armed Forces instead. JCE president Roberto Rosario told Diario Libre that the decision was based on the increased security provided by the Armed Forces. He said it was an administrative decision and therefore would not require a public tender.
"The issue about transportation does not need a tender and therefore it was given directly to them (Fenatrado) and for this same reason it was taken away," he stated in response to questions about the change.
Rosario had warned that he would use the Armed Forces for transporting the materials if Fenatrado went ahead with its plans to declare a strike on 8 May.
