The Caribbean Jazz Tour opens on Wednesday, 2 May at the Salon Ambar of the Dominican Fiesta Hotel & Casino. The event commemorates UNESCO International Jazz Day, set for 30 April. Jazz is recognized as a musical genre that has united peoples and races, creating opportunities for interaction between well-known musicians from the United States, the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean countries.

The program will conclude on 4 May starting 6:30pm with a free concert by the Oscar Micheli Trio, made up of pianist, composer and arranger Oscar Micheli, drummer Vlade Guigny and bass player Esar Simo, also at the Dominican Fiesta.

Nikauly Vargas, the UNESCO secretary general in the Dominican Republic, said that although jazz was born in African-American communities in New Orleans, it is a genre that is easily adapted to other rhythms including merengue and tropical music.

Fernando Rodriguez, of Jazz en Dominicana, the country's leading jazz promotional organization, highlighted that Dominican groups have introduced elements of merengue and bachata in their improvisations.
