The Dominican stop of the Latin American PGA Tour will be the Dominican Republic Open to be played at Jack Nicklaus-designed Cana Bay Golf Course, 5-11 November in northern Punta Cana.

The Dominican Golf Federation and the PGA Tour Latinoamerica announced this week reaching an agreement to include the DR in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Latin American PGA Tour.

144 players will play for US$125,000 in prize money. Jack Warfield, president of the PGA Tour Latinoamerica announced that the tournament is open to the first 100 players in the ranking for that division.

Juan Cohen, of the Dominican Golf Federation welcomed the news as recognition of the positioning Dominican golf has obtained in recent years. He said the tournament would be played to 72 holes in four rounds of 18 holes between Thursday, 8 November and Sunday, 11 November with the stroke play modality. On Monday, 5 November a qualifying round for professionals not ranked by the PGA will take place. On Wednesday, 7 a Pro-Am will be played with Dominican players. Cohen announced the DR Open golf event would become the PGA Latin American Tour.

The PGA Tour Latinoamerica was announced in October 2011, as a partnership between the national federations in Latin America, the Tour de las Americas and a number of event promoters and host golf clubs in the region. The leading professional golf organization in the USA sees the expansion into Latin America as part of a natural progression for golf. PGA Tour Latinoamerica, which has been the subject of speculation for several months, will be an 11-event circuit that runs from September to December 2012 with events in Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and the Dominican Republic.
