The Fernandez administration began the construction of the Santo Domingo Metro in 2005, with a first line in operation in 2008, and the first half of the second line scheduled to enter into operation by the end of the year. The metro has proven its worth for thousands of commuters who enjoy the comfortable and efficient rides that are heavily subsidized by Dominican taxpayers.
The Fernandez administration has revealed the overall plan for six lines, including one that will connect the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, as reported in El Caribe. The first 14.5km line, which has been in operation since 2008, runs from Villa Mella in the north to the Centro de los Heroes in the south. The first half of the second 13.8km line is expected to be in operation by the end of this year, and runs from Km. 9 of Duarte Highway along JF Kennedy Avenue to the Puente Francisco del Rosario Sanchez in the east. The first half has operated for free on a test run to the Santo Domingo book fair, with cars running practically full as commuters make the most of the free rides. The second half will bring this line to a length of 34kms. The second part of the second line will take the subway all the way to Los Alcarrizos in the north, and all the way to San Luis in the east, and is expected to be concluded in the next government.
A third line is contemplated to be built from Haina Port at Km. 12 of the Carretera Sanchez to run for 20kms under 27 de Febrero Avenue all the way beyond the Faro a Colon in eastern Santo Domingo.
The government also plans three shorter lines that would feed into the main 1, 2 and 3 lines. These are:
Line 4 that would connect Km. 12 of the Port of Haina to Km. 9.
Line 5 that would connect Ensanche Isabelita, where Line 3 finished, under Av. Vicente de Paul on to Megacentro shopping center, also with a connection to Line 2 where it crosses the Ensanche Isabelita.
Line 6 is planned to run from near the Liceo La Normal Juan Pablo Duarte station of Line 2 south under Av. Jose Marti to reach the Colonial City.
