In an interview with the Corripio Media Group, European Union ambassador in the Dominican Republic, Irene Horejs, announced the celebration of Europe Day on 9 May and the events that will highlight European cooperation in the Dominican Republic.

One is the Citizens and Rights fair in Santiago, from Friday, 4 May to Sunday, 6 May at the city government building. A second fair, European Union-Dominican Republic Economic Alliance, will take place on 8-9 May at the Center for Export and Investment of the Dominican Republic offices with the participation of more than 25 organizations that have received aid from the European Union in several areas.

During the interview she said that the European Union would continue to back programs in the DR, but the continuation of this support would depend more on the Dominican Republic than on Europe. She said many programs are conditional on the implementation of the National Development Strategy, which was recently passed in Congress, and on the maintenance of economic stability.

The DR is now seen as a middle-income country, and there is concern that European Union funding could decline as a result. Nonetheless, she said that aid is being focused on specific sectors. The European Union is the DR's leading donor.

She said the same applies to all the rest of the Caribbean, with the exception of Haiti. For example, the European Union will continue to support mitigation of catastrophes and natural disasters, depending on the vulnerability of each country. She said that backing to fight drug trafficking would also continue as that is a scourge that affects all.

She said that in 2012, the European Union has programs totaling EUR276 million, of which EUR55 million will be disbursed this year.

She stressed that progress in Haiti is essential for reducing migration to the Dominican Republic. She said that Dominican exports to Haiti have grown, and that the European Union would continue to encourage trade by backing improvements in Dominican company competitiveness, as reported in Hoy. She mentioned that an ambitious bilateral project has been drafted for Haiti.

Horejs added that the European Union has EUR33 million available to back economic governance and competitiveness through 2013. A further EUR12 million will be invested in civil society.

She commented that the welfare of the DR is important for the stability and reconstruction in Haiti. She said there would be no solution for Haiti that is not tied to the stability of the Dominican Republic. She said the European Union would continue to back reforms in public administration, finances and decentralization that are considered important for governance. She said there has been progress in the DR in budgetary reforms, planning for spending and foreign sector policies, including internal controls.

She commented that trade between the DR and European Union countries amounted to EUR1.32 billion last year. She said that European investment in the DR was EUR337.2 million during the same period. Donations reached EUR175.7 million.
