Dominican Medical Association (CMD) executive committee members have expressed their indignation at the lawsuits to which surgeons and other specialists are constantly being subjected. With obvious annoyance, CMD president Dr. Amarilis Herrera said that she is concerned about the elevated rate of lawsuits that her colleagues are being served. She mentioned three cases in recent days, including that of Dr. Franklin Hasbun, sentenced to one year in jail for involuntary homicide against a patient.
She said that many of the lawsuits are pushed by lawyers who, motivated by money, are egged on by the media. Herrera warned that in the cases in which the court dismisses the accusations of medical negligence, the CMD would file a counter lawsuit against the plaintiffs. The doctor pointed out that the situation causes serious moral, family and economic damage to the people affected.
