President Leonel Fernandez was on the campaign trail for the PLD over the weekend. On Sunday he toured Villa Mella, Guaricanos and Sabana Perdida, three low-income mega-barrios in the Province of Santo Domingo, as reported in Listin Diario. He toured northern Santo Domingo to back the presidential candidacies of Danilo Medina and his wife, Margarita Cedeno. He was joined by his son, Omar Leonel Fernandez, and other leading PLD party members.
On Monday, the main newspapers published a two-page spread from the Presidency of the Republic and the Presidency Press office highlighting new public works including the Carretera Mao-Santiago Rodriguez, the municipal hospital in Baitoa, Santiago, paving of streets in Palmarito, Monsenor Nouel, reconstruction of the Carretera Pedernales highway, the construction of the club for journalists in Barahona, inauguration of the Los Salados church in Santiago, and the remodeling of the Bella Vista barrio basketball court in Santiago.
First Lady Margarita Cedeno was in Santiago on Sunday to campaign for the PLD ticket. She visited the low-income urban barrios of Los Jazmines, Cristo Rey and Pekin before going to Tamboril.
PLD presidential candidate Danilo Medina was in Salcedo and Cotui where he promised to create opportunities aimed at reducing the number of poor people by 1.5 million. He promised to create 400,000 new jobs if elected President on 20 May 2012.
