The Dominican Republic women's volleyball team, ranked ninth in the world, defeated Cuba (ranked tenth, but three-time Olympic champions) on Saturday, 5 May to become one of 12 teams to play in the London Olympics. This is just the second time a Dominican volleyball team has qualified for the Olympics. The team played in the Athens Olympics in 2004, when the DR defeated the US volleyball team, finishing 11th.

The DR qualified in Mexico with a 3-1 win (25-18, 25-23, 27-29, 25-20) against the Cuban team during the finals of the Norceca Women's Olympic Qualification Tournament.

The DR team's Bethania de la Cruz was elected the Most Valuable Player of the competition. The DR team became the sixth qualifier for the Olympics on Saturday. On Sunday, Turkey (ranked 11th) qualified. As of Monday, 7 May seven teams have qualified to the volleyball tournament of the 2012 London Olympic Games. The other teams that have qualified so far are Italy, United States, China, Algeria, Turkey and host Great Britain.

"To tell the truth I don't have words to say what the feeling is," said Brazilian Marcos Kwiek, the Dominican Republic coach. "This is the result of four years of hard work and God rewarded us with the ticket to the London Games," he said as reported by norceca.org

The DR men's team is playing today in the men's qualifier taking place in Long Beach, California. However, the DR men are ranked 46th in the world. Today they play Canada, ranked 18th.
