The Ministry of Tourism has announced a special fund for the reconstruction of the Pueblo de los Pescadores on the beach in Las Terrenas. Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia said that although the new structure would be more modern, it would conserve its former architectural style.

A fire at around 5am on Monday, 7 May wiped out the traditional wooden structures housing around 15 restaurants and bars on the beach. Most of the businesses were operated by foreigners and the good food served in the area was one of Samana's leading attractions. An estimated 200 employees have been temporarily left without work.

According to news reports, firefighters in Las Terrenas were not equipped to tackle a fire. As reported in El Caribe, Raul Hernandez said that he had requested a fire truck on several occasions without an answer from the authorities. Because of the early hour, no one was injured in the blaze.

Almost all of the structures in the area were wooden because the Ministry of Environment prohibits concrete constructions on the beach. As a result, only zinc roofing and metal equipment was left by the blaze, which will facilitate the clean-up operation and leave a stretch of beach with the fire only apparent in the charred coconut palm trunks.

As reported in Listin Diario, Garcia announced the donation of a fire truck to Las Terrenas.

As reported in Hoy, local residents Xiomara Ariza and Orlando Martinez criticized Las Terrenas Mayor Alexis Martinez for only knowing how to charge taxes, saying that after eight consecutive years in office, the mayor is able to show little invested in the community. Ariza said if there had been a fire truck, the fire would not have spread. She said she raised the alarm at 5am when the fire had just started. Buckets of seawater were used to put out the fire after it had done most of its damage.

Hoy reported the businesses that burned were El Cayuco, El Mosquito, La Terrasse, Pizza Playa, Indigo, La Pulperia, Cuca Marina, El Chichi, Higo, La Salsa, Son Latino, El Toro, Sports Bar. The fire was said to have begun in El Cayuco.

Police Colonel Antonio Cabrera Sarita said the fire took just two hours to destroy the 60-year old row of restaurants on the beach.
