The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) announced on Monday, 7 May the seizure of 175 packages of pure cocaine and the arrest of 16 people believed to belong to a drug trafficking network that operated between South America, the Dominican Republic and Eastern Europe. The shipment was confiscated from a sailboat in waters off Grenada. The arrested on board include citizens of Ukraine, Austria, Serbia, Venezuela, Grenada, St. Martin and Martinique. As reported, the DNCD and the US DEA had been following the network for around six months. Upon making the announcement, Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo said that the network was shipping cocaine to Eastern European using the Dominican Republic as a bridge country. He said the arrests were possible because of the establishment of a maritime barrier in the Caribbean in cooperation with the DEA, and police forces of Ukraine, Austria, Martinique and St. Martin. In the Dominican Republic, Ukrainians Ivan Zanze and Urgakovic Zlatko, Serbian Nebojsa Gancanovic and Venezuelan Antonio Jose Parra Florentino were arrested. The network was known as The Triad.
He said that the individuals were based in Boca Chica from where they made contact with boats that traveled the Eastern Caribbean route, with shipments from Colombia to Europe. The group was arrested in Boca Chica.
