The Ministry of Public Health is sending epidemiological specialists and health workers to 38 provinces to work through the provincial health centers to educate the public about preventive measures and to check for the outbreak of diseases following the heavy rains over the last weeks. The measures include the elimination of breeding insects and cleaning up garbage as well as distributing leaflets on how to prevent disease and place rat poison.

Public Health Minister Dr. Bautista Rojas Gomez said that the rains could encourage more mosquitoes to breed, which in turn may cause dengue and malaria. He is also seeking to prevent an increase in the number of leptospirosis cases.

The Public Health Ministry is working together with the Environmental Health department, the Center for the Control of Tropical Diseases, (CENCET) and members of community associations and churches.
