Over 500 homes and businesses in El Manguito, a slum area in central Santo Domingo, have been fitted with prepaid meters. Launching the new service in the neighborhood, Celso Marranzini, executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) stressed that consumers should see the service the same way they treat their prepaid telephone cards. He said the new service enables consumers to decide how much power they will consume. The CDEEE has guaranteed 24-hour service to the barrio following the installation of the meters. In El Manguito, 515 of 603 consumers signed on for the prepaid plans, including 16 stores.

Marranzini said the prepaid meters would also be installed in Los Alcarrizos and Villa Juana. In Villa Juana the service will be in operation in early June. Marranzini said that goal is to install prepaid meters in at least 300,000 households within the next 12 months.

The prepaid meters system is also being implemented in barrios in the southeast.

Marranzini announced that around 900,000 consumers already receive 24-hour service. He also said that the number of paying consumers has increased from 800,000 in 2006 to 2,160,000 at the present time.
