William Encarnacion became the first Dominican boxer to qualify for the London Olympics yesterday, Tuesday 8 May. He defeated Cesar Diaz of Peru in the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Americas Continental Olympic Qualifiers, staged in Rio de Janeiro. In the 56 kilos category, he won 26-7.
Another Dominican, Felix Valera was eliminated, when he lost to Marcus Browne of the US in the 81-kilo division.
Others who will try to make it are Wellington Arias in 60 kilos, Junior Castillo in 75 kilos and Dagoberto Aguero in flyweight.
