The issue is political, as confirmed by the Gallup poll that showed that corruption revelations by TV journalist Nuria Piera against key Fernandez government official and senator Felix Bautista have cost votes for the PLD presidential candidacy.
Now, PRD activist Jaime Aristy Escuder is publishing a new book with details of the supposedly closed issue of the Sun Land international financing of construction at the UASD University. The PRD had accused the government of executing a US$130 million loan without passing it through Congress. The government secured a complacent decision by the Supreme Court of Justice, with three judges voting against, releasing the government of responsibility in the case.
Ines Aizpun, writing in Diario Libre, says that the book calls for a reopening of the Sun Land case in the courts and leaves the challenge for the next government.
Yesterday, The Dominican Alliance against Corruption (ADOCCO) presented formal accusations to the former director of the Office of Supervisory Engineers of Public Works of the Presidency and current San Juan de la Maguana senator and construction businessman, Felix Ramon Bautista Rosario. They accuse him of irregularities in the handling of more than RD$12 billion in 2008. In the claims placed by Adocco, reportedly there is proof that Bautista illegally appropriated US$112 million of the US$130 million contracted by Sun Land without the approval of the National Congress.
The directors of Adocco say that the irregularities include illegal increases in the value of contracted public works from 2005-2008 for RD$6.5 billion, and the overvaluation of the remodeling of the Palacio de Bellas Artes and underground parking that was increased from RD$761 million to RD$1.6 billion. They also claim Bautista is involved in the overvaluation of the remodeling of the National Library at Plaza de la Cultura by RD$700 million, in violation of the National Procurement Law.
