24-year old judo star Maria Garcia earned the right to compete in the Olympics in the 52kg category. She won the ticket by winning bronze in the Continental Qualifier that took place yesterday, Wednesday, 9 May, in Montreal. Garcia is ranked 43rd in the country. This will be her second time at the Olympics. She represented the DR in Beijing in 2008, falling in the quarterfinals to Kim Gyeong-Ok of South Korea.

Also ensuring their qualification yesterday, featherweight Wellington Arias (60 kilos) and Junior Castillo (75 kilos), joined William Encarnacion (56 kilos) who had qualified earlier in the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Americas Continental Olympic Qualifiers in Rio de Janeiro.

With these three, a total of 31 Dominicans have won tickets to the London 2012 Olympics.
