Ruling party presidential candidate Danilo Medina said he opposes increasing the sales and value-added tax from 16% to 18%, as has been speculated. An IMF document leaked to the media this week suggests that this could be a way for the government to secure resources to cover its growing fiscal deficit.

Medina said he has agreed to meet with business representatives to discuss a comprehensive fiscal pact that would also include evaluating government spending and income levels. He said he is aware that an agreement needs to be reached so that companies can grow and create needed jobs, while allowing the government to meet pressing needs for social policies, as reported in Hoy.

Both the tourism and business sectors, Asonahores and Anje recently called for adjustments in the size of government and its spending levels. They believe that the government needs to adjust the composition and quality of public spending before creating or increasing taxes.
