In a television broadcast last night, Thursday 10 May, former President Hipolito Mejia pledged to sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, restructure public spending, eliminate wastefulness and apply strict austerity measures if he is elected President during the 20 May 2012 presidential election. In a speech aired through a network of radio and TV stations, Mejia said that the measures would lead to savings for investment in social programs aimed at improving people's quality of life. He said that he would assign 4% of GDP to education and would prioritize early education so that children may have equal opportunities. He also pledged to implement social policies aimed at overcoming poverty and social exclusion. He promised macro-economic stability and that in his first 24 hours in government he would create a Law on Volunteerism to contribute to citizen safety. He said his priority is to create 400,000 jobs in formal alliance with the business sector. The PRD candidate said he would also put an emphasis on housing construction, small businesses and the agro-forestry and industrial sectors.
