The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has issued a green alert for eleven provinces due to the heavy rains which continue to fall over the central part of the country and the north and northwest which have resulted in rising water levels in the rivers Yaque de Norte, La Ceiba, Magua-Moncion and Juma-Bonao.
The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) is forecasting thunderstorms in the northeast, southeast, southwest, border area and the central regions today, Friday 11 May.
The provinces under green alert are: Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris), Santiago, La Vega, Monsenor Nouel (Bonao), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Espaillat (Moca), San Juan de la Maguana, Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, Puerto Plata and Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo).
The COE says that there has been flooding in Tamboril in the sectors of Los Pozos, Barrio Manolo, Deje, El Batey, El Arenoso, Barrio Felipe Duran and Hoyo de los Perros and some 200 homes are under water in Villa Vasquez.
In San Pedro de Macoris the following communities have been cut off: Ramon Santana, Cachon Primo, Loma al Duey, Diego, Cabeza de Toro, Pinones, Campina and Lima.
In Puerto Plata province, due to the rain and lack of effective drainage, ten homes have been flooded in Yasica and their residents are staying with friends and neighbors.
A total of 3,500 people have had to leave their homes, 210 homes have been flooded and four totally destroyed, as reported in Diario Libre.
On the positive side, the National Water Observatory that gathers government bodies in charge of dams, aqueducts, and the weather reporting, says that reservoir water levels are at optimum levels for power generation and farm irrigation. Antonio Cocco Quezada, advisor to the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) said that water reserves are at 71.9%, the second highest level in the past decade, only surpassed by 81.8% that was reported in 2006.
