According to the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) 28 people have been killed by lightning and 19 have been injured over the last three years.
El Dia quotes Onamet director Gloria Ceballos as saying that May is known as the month with most lightning strikes as well as being the first month of the storm season that ends in October. She advised the public to take care during storms and to disconnect all electrical appliances including computers and televisions and avoid using the telephone. People should not work outside or touch metallic objects such as tractors, hoes, rakes, machetes or knives, or seek shelter under tall trees such as pine trees.
