Journalist Juan Bolivar Diaz, one of 188 people to whom the Central Electoral Board (JCE) allegedly objected on the list of observers put forward by civic group Participacion Ciudadana for the 20 May 2012 election, is calling for an apology from the JCE. He says that the JCE objected to 236 of the total of 3,805 proposed observers, claiming they had police records, links to drug trafficking, criminal backgrounds and involvement in politics.

He says that after a thorough check, 116 had errors in their cedula (ID card) numbers but this should not disqualify them from participating. Of the 91 with links to politics, 25 were not associated with any particular party. The others had been candidates for a minor electoral post. In one case, a person had been sentenced but later pardoned, so his rights would have been restored. A thorough examination proved there were no criminals or drug traffickers on the list as the JCE had claimed during a press conference on 1 May 2012. Journalist Diaz himself asked for a public apology, because he was placed at No. 17 on the list of observers presented by JCE for alleged links with drug trafficking.
