The Brazilian coach of the Dominican volleyball team, the sixth world team to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics, has told Listin Diario that his goal is for the team to win a medal in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics. Marcos Kwiek, 45, said the team would be well prepared for the London Olympics. "It will be a magical scenario: the objective is to play the best we can," he said. He speculated that more could be accomplished in London than they have already achieved.
Kwiek took over the coaching of the team four years ago, leaving behind the job of assistant to Jose Roberto Guimaraes, men's team in Brazil. When he took over the team, it had failed to accomplish a repeat of making the Olympics as had been done in 2004.
He told Listin Diario that he had entered a transition period, when young players were brought up to merge with the more experienced veterans in the team. This year he signed on for another four-year contract with the Dominican team.
The Dominican Republic is ranked ninth in the world in women's volleyball, only behind the USA, Brazil, Japan, Italy, China, Serbia, Russia, Germany.

Meanwhile, Cristobal Marte, president of the Norceca, is urging the Presidency to finish the remodeling of the Volleyball Pavilion in time for the Grand Prix. He said the country faces a fine of US$40,000 and a ban on competing in the Olympics if it does not meet its commitment towards the pavilion. The main problems are that the roof needs repairs and the new floor has not arrived. The works were entrusted to the Office of the Supervisory Works of the Presidency but Marte says that the pavilion is not being repaired, as reported in Hoy. Marte appealed to Luis Sifre of OISOE to fulfill the country's commitment.
