President Leonel Fernandez and Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia led a ceremony launching the construction of a cruise ship port, Amber Cove, in Maimon, Puerto Plata province, yesterday, Monday 14 May.

Garcia told reporters that the new 50,000 square meter ship terminal would guarantee the launch of tourism in the north, providing thousands of jobs and generating wealth for the local population.

While the terminal will be built and operated by Carnival, the company will allocate space to other ships from other lines.

The terminal will have the capacity to receive two ships simultaneously, with around 5,000 passengers on board. A feasibility study showed that as many as 250,000 passengers could arrive during the first year, increasing to 600,000 in the next three years.

The new Carnival Cruise Line terminal will cost US$65 million and according to Fernandez and Garcia, this is just one more "expression of confidence in our country by foreign investors," as reported in Hoy.

Garcia said that tourism was up over 7% in the first quarter.
