The National Business Council (Conep) will conduct an exit poll on the presidential elections this Sunday, 20 May. Gallup Dominicana with a sample of 7,000 interviews - chosen randomly - all over the country, will carry out the poll, reported Diario Libre. The exit poll will be taken after the voter has cast his or her vote. The pollsters will be located 50 meters from the ballot boxes and voting stations.

Conep president Manuel Diez Cabral, together with the president of Gallup Dominicana, Rafael Acevedo said that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) did not object to Gallup doing the polls as had been commented earlier.

The business group says Conep is sponsoring the poll as part of its commitment to activities aimed at strengthening the democratic and institutional system.

Rafael Acevedo, president of Gallup Dominicana, added that exit polls are used in every country in the world. He said that people are not interviewed, but asked to fill in a form that is then placed in a box carried by the pollster, and after the work is finished the results will be given to the JCE.

Acevedo said that they are not worried about anyone boycotting the poll, since they have always known how to respect this type of work. He referred to the fact that Gallup has been doing this sort of work for more than 80 years, and so it neither fears anyone nor has it had any sort of incidents.

Diez Cabral also told journalists that it was "irrelevant" whether the document presented by the PRD on a forthcoming new "tax patch" expected to be imposed after the election is legitimate or not. The tax patch supposedly was suggested by the International Monetary Fund. Cabral maintained that Conep maintains its position that government spending needed to be rationalized if the productive sector is to be competitive. He protested the regular government practice of merely increasing taxes to maintain high spending levels.
