The United Nations has granted the first place award of their Public Service category, Improving Delivery of a Public Service, to the Essential Medicines Program (Promese/CAL), part of the Ministry of Public Health. The international award is for excellence in public service. Second place went to entities in Mexico and Grenada. The award was received by Elena Fernandez Nunez during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace. Elena Fernandez is a sister of President Leonel Fernandez.
According to Listin Diario, Minister Ramon Ventura Camejo, Jacqueline Malagon and the UN resident representative in the Dominican Republic, Valerie Julliand attended the award ceremony. Promese is a government-run pharmacy chain that provides low-cost medicines, mainly generics, for the public.
