A study by the Center for Exports and Investment in the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD) reveals that between 2004 and 2010 the markets along the border with Haiti, mainly Dajabon and Jimani, sold over US$870 million worth of goods to Haitians. Most of this money went on purchases of flour, rice, and other food products. Cement and re-bar for construction were purchased, especially after the earthquake in 2010. In total, the CEI-RD report identified 1,334 product lines that were exported to Haiti through these markets.
The study revealed that Jimani was the largest market with over US$540 million being spent there over the six-year period. Dajabon was also a major market with over US$140 million in sales, followed by Elias Pina with US$105 million.
According to Listin Diario, even Pedernales averaged well over US$2 million a year for the six-year period.
