President Leonel Fernandez met with the members of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) Plenary at his office at the Presidential Palace last night, Wednesday, 16 May. The judges handed the President a progress report on the elections and they discussed the constitutional guarantees that the Dominican state should give the candidates.

At the end of the meeting, JCE president Roberto Rosario, accompanied by magistrates Eddy Olivares, Cesar Francisco Feliz Feliz, Rosario Graciano and Jose Angtel Aquino, said that the visit was routine and part of a custom during an election year to update the Chief of State on the election. The presidential elections take place on Sunday, 20 May.

"The meeting was limited to the necessary protocol that has to be fulfilled by the Central Electoral Board during each process," said Rosario.

The JCE president added that tomorrow, Friday, 18 May, President Fernandez would receive an international delegation of the observers who have been invited to observe the elections. Moreover he said that the only thing left to do for the presidential elections is "essentially for all Dominicans to get out and vote," and he guaranteed that the population would find out the winner of the elections early in the evening, so that citizens "could sleep peacefully."

The meeting between the President and the JCE Plenary members began at 8:10pm and ended at 9:25pm.
