Crash and explosion leaves three injured

Three people were injured after a crash between several shared taxis ("conchos") on Sabana Larga Street, between Independencia and Las Carreras in Santiago de los Caballeros yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 16 May. El Nuevo Diario reports that three cars belonging to the "A" line and one that serves the "U" line collided into one another as a result of a typical traffic jam. The propane tank in one of the cars sprung a leak and the resulting fire and explosion injured Rafael Mirabal, Jose Rafael Reyes, both drivers, and the passenger Maruja Martinez, 53, who was injured in the leg as she tried to flee the scene of the fire and crash. The injured were treated in local hospitals and clinics. Local Fire Department units extinguished the fire and it was all over in 40 minutes.
