In his first address as President-elect, Danilo Medina made a conciliatory gesture. Yesterday, Monday, 21 May, in front of hundreds of supporters congregated outside the PLD national headquarters to celebrate the victory, he reiterated his intention to pursue a pact with the PRD, "because we all have to face the country's problems together." Medina revealed that he would create a consensus government. He mentioned his commitment to making three pacts with Dominican society through the National Development Strategy: one for education, one for taxes and one for electricity.

He said that he was committed to distributing all the wealth that the administrations of his party have created to reach "the provinces, the municipalities, but especially the people."

The President-elect also reiterated that he would work for the country's children and elderly people, and to involve young people and all who want to work. He also ratified his commitment towards tourism, farming, the "Mipymes"(Micro-small and medium businesses), and the industrialists.

In his victory speech to the PLD faithful at party headquarters yesterday, the virtual president-elect praised PRD candidate Hipolito Mejia. Medina said he wished to reestablish the friendly relations "that have united us in the past." He extended the invitation to Rosa Gomez, Mejia's wife, and his son Ramon Hipolito, whom he called his personal friend, and to his other son Felipe and his wife Lissa. "To all of them, a respectful hug and my consideration," said Medina.

He said that thanks to Mejia he had to become a better candidate. He called on Mejia, who he described as a worthy rival, to feel good, because the Dominican people had revindicated him in the past election. He said he would pursue a pact with the PRD to push forward the reforms the country needs, as reported in El Dia.

According to bulletin No. 11, issued yesterday with 100% of the polling stations reported, 4,566,838 (70.23%) votes were cast, of which 30,430 were annulled (0.67%) and just 27 were observed. This shows that the total abstention rate was 29.72%. In total, 6,502,960 people were registered to vote. The PLD won the Presidency with 35% of the universe of possible voters.
