The Socialist International announced yesterday, Monday, 21 May, that in their view the Central Electoral Board (JCE) was not all that impartial in the elections, and called on them to clear up some of the complaints of irregularities. During a press conference held at the Jose Francisco Pena Gomez School of Political Training, Luis Ayala, the secretary general of the Socialist International, said that former President Hipolito Mejia was willing to admit defeat if the truth is established first.

Ayala told Hoy newspaper reporter Juan Maria Ramirez that the government should not be such a determining factor in the democratic decision-making process, as occurred when President Fernandez was inaugurating public works projects just hours before the elections. Ayala also referred to the purchase of voter ID cards, called "cedulas," which as he said was a practice dating back decades.

He ended his comments by saying that the PRD should gather all the available information about the irregularities and report them to the corresponding channels in order to be able to obtain the backing of the Socialist International.
