In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Drug Enforcement Administration officials noted that increased police pressure in the north of Mexico is forcing the Colombian drug cartels to ship their product using alternative routes, with Puerto Rico becoming one of the principal gateways into the United States. Pedro Janer, acting special agent in charge of the Caribbean Division of the US Drug Enforcement Administration told Spanish press agency EFE that the Dominican Republic was becoming a sort of "drug warehouse" for transshipment of cocaine. Diario Libre carries the story and says that the so-called "Eastern Route" starts in Venezuela and Colombia and then the Dominican Republic. From the DR, the drugs are shipped to the British Virgin Islands and some of the smaller countries like Antigua, and from there to Puerto Rico. According to Janer, once the drugs are in Puerto Rico it is much easier for them to reach the United States.
