Last night, Tuesday 22 May, PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia, acknowledged Danilo Medina's victory in the Sunday presidential elections, and proclaimed himself leader of the opposition. He said that in that role, he would work in defense of the national interests and the preservation of peace of the Dominican family.

During a speech from a hotel in the capital, transmitted on television, he said that the outcome announced by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) was the result of manipulation and an abuse of power that did not reflect the free will of the people. He said the results were "unacceptable." He described the elections as the most unequal since the Trujillo era, adding that they had been influenced by the irregular use of state resources, the arrests of opposition politicians and the intervention of President Leonel Fernandez in the electoral campaign.

He said that he felt proud that despite competing in such unfair conditions he had received a high level of votes that confirmed that the PRD was the main political force in the country.

Mejia spoke to the nation amid social network rumors that the PRD would not accept the defeat.
