PRD president Miguel Vargas Maldonado, who kept a low profile during the presidential campaign, says that his party would exercise firm and responsible opposition to the new government. In a declaration last night, Tuesday 22 May, he announced national consultations to prepare for adjustments to the party's methods and strategies and a re-launch of their working programs for a more successful and efficient political organization.

He said that he accepted the results from the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and that the PRD recognized the role of the Dominican people in the process.

He said that the PRD was the principal political force in the country and their role was to contain and prevent excesses that could be incurred by the PLD given that the party controls the branches of government, as reported in El Nuevo Diario.

Writing in today's Listin Diario, political commentator Cesar Medina writes to say that while Hipolito Mejia would like to blame Miguel Vargas Maldonado for the defeat, the latter met his institutional obligations as president of the party during the election. He writes that Vargas delivered the RD$170 million JCE contribution to the candidate, fought for and obtained the No. 1 placement on the electoral ballot, and carried out an institutional campaign nationwide calling to vote for the party, and instructed that his followers at all levels be free to join the campaign.

Vargas and Mejia split ways after Vargas accused Mejia of benefitting from thousands of PLD voters in the open primary.

In Dominican politics, there is a saying that "only the PRD defeats the PRD," taking note of how internal political divisions had affected the party's electoral destiny.
