At least 60 patients were hospitalized yesterday in Tamboril with suspected cholera symptoms. Many of the cases are affecting people who were sick during the previous outbreak, which suggests a problem with their water supply. The deputy minister of Collective Health, Jose Rodriguez Aybar said Public Health is visiting every home in the area to stress how to prevent cholera and to educate the public, as well as to distribute chlorine and look for new cases.

The director of Environmental Health, Luis Emilio Feliz Roa said that they had discovered that the main contamination problems were found inside the home, caused by the families themselves and that is why they needed to put chlorine in the water tanks and cisterns. He said that Edenorte had guaranteed 24-hour electricity from Friday in the areas that were supplied with water so that residents would have a permanent water supply.

Up to now there have been 1,113 cases of cholera nationwide, with 26 deaths since the beginning of the year.

Feliz Roa said that while this latest outbreak was limited to Tamboril, they were keeping a close watch on the nearby town of Navarrete, as reported in Listin Diario.
