A man accused of multiple murders of family members committed suicide yesterday, Tuesday, 22 May. He had killed his former wife and her son, and injured his daughter-in-law who is 35 weeks pregnant. Both mother and baby were saved.
Listin Diario reports that the family tragedy occurred in the Libertador neighborhood in Herrera at around 3am. Felicita Perez, 58 and Wellington Guzman, 25, are the victims and Vangelio Guzman, 62, the murderer. Elizabeth Perez Guzman, 37, his daughter-in-law, was injured. She was taken to the Marcelino Velez Regional General Hospital in Herrera where she gave birth by C-section. Her right kidney and spleen were removed due to bullet wounds, reported Dr. Juan Alvarez Vargas, hospital director. The baby weighed almost 6 lbs.
According to the newspaper, Vangelio Guzman had a restraining order against him meeting with his ex-wife but he arrived early and lay down on her bed. Their two older sons came and took their father home, but he returned at around 2am, breaking a window and firing at his ex-wife, her son and daughter-in-law, said Felicita's brother Miranda Perez.
Miranda Perez told the newspaper that Guzman was aggressive, arrogant and an alcoholic who used to beat his ex-wife. They had been separated for seven months after the revelation that Guzman had impregnated his daughter-in-law, who is a deaf-mute.
Vangelio Guzman, who lived in St. Thomas, had returned on Saturday to vote in the Sunday, 20 May election. "The devil got into my father," said Henry Guzman, son of the couple, as quoted in El Dia. Wellington Guzman was staying at the house to protect his mother.
