With two months and five days left before the start of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the Sports Minister handed over the second and final part of the RD$48.7 million pesos to the Dominican Olympic Committee yesterday, Tuesday 22 May, on behalf of the government to complete preparations for the Dominican delegation. A few months ago they handed over RD$20 million.

Sports Minister Felipe Payano presented the funds to Olympic Committee president Luisin Mejia, at a press conference. He asked God to help the team and said that this money proved that there was planning in sport in the country, as reported in Hoy.

The Dominican Republic is taking its largest delegation ever to the Olympics. As of 22 May, 34 Dominican athletes had already qualified to compete in the Games. The Dominican Republic has won four medals at the Olympics. These are: Pedro Julio Nolasco, bronze in bantamweight boxing (Los Angeles, 1984), Felix Sanchez, gold 400m hurdles (Athens, 2004), Gabriel Mercedes, silver in 58kg taekwondo (Beijing 2008), and Felix Diaz, gold in 64kg boxing (Beijing 2008).
